Manuscript preparation and submission requirements​

The Belize Journal of Medicine is a medical journal in English and Spanish. Manuscripts are  received in both languages as Editorials, Letters to the editor, Original Articles, Short Communications, and Reviews, Event Reports and announcements related to them or to health products and services. The work must be unpublished. Once approved by our Editorial Committee, it may not be submitted for consideration in another journal for multiple publication without permission of BC Editions.

The manuscripts will be presented in Word format, (8.5 x 11 with line spacing of 1.5 and 12 font). They will include the basic headings of a scientific paper: Title (with the authors under), Abstract (approximately 250 words in English and in Spanish) and the Keywords under it (3 to 6), Introduction (includes the background, context and objectives of the work), Materials and Methods, Results (with tables, graphs, figures and photos to aid understanding), Discussion, Conclusions (short, only the most important) and References. 

Writing shall follow the ICMJE Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly work in Medical Journals (http://www.icmje.org/). 

Abbreviations and acronyms. The full name will precede the first time they appear in the text. They will not be used in titles or abstracts. 

References will appear in the order they are cited in the text, using numbers in parentheses without superscripts, as follows: "It has been observed (3, 4) ..." Or: "Several authors (1–5) have said ... ". In that order they will be grouped at the end of work. The ordering of bibliographic elements and the use of punctuation marks follow the Vancouver style (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html).

The Editorial Committee of the Belize Journal of Medicine will or will not publish the manuscripts according to the recommendations of the reviewers. The following criteria are taken into account: the material is original and submitted in a timely manner; the writing, clear; the methods used, appropriate; data, valid; conclusions are reasonable and based on the data, the information is relevant and the topic is of general medical interest. To ensure confidentiality, the arbitration process is done in pairs and double blind.

The referees will review the work and make recommendations or suggestions, which will be sent to the authors for consideration and correction. The author should return the corrected manuscript in not more than 15 days; otherwise the manuscript could be automatically canceled. The editors may make changes in the manuscripts, which will be communicated to the author whenever feasible, to adjust them to the style of the journal; provided they do not alter the meaning or significance of the content.

Requisitos para la preparación y envío de manuscritos

La revista Belize Journal of Medicine es una revista de temas médicos en inglés y español. Recibe manuscritos en ambos idiomas en forma de Editoriales, Cartas al editor, Artículos originales, Comunicaciones cortas, y Revisiones, Reportes de eventos y anuncios relacionados con éstos, o con productos y servicios de salud. Los trabajos deberán ser inéditos. Una vez aprobados por nuestro Comité Editorial, no podrán someterse a la consideración de otra revista, con vistas a una publicación múltiple, sin la debida autorización de  BC Editions.

Los manuscritos se presentarán en formato Word, (8,5 x 11 con interlineado de 1,5 y un puntaje tipográfico de 12). Contendrán los acápites fundamentales de un trabajo científico: Título (con los autores debajo), Resumen (250 palabras aproximadamente en inglés y en español) y debajo las Palabras clave (de 3 a 6), Introducción (incluye los antecedentes, contexto y objetivos del trabajo), Materiales y Métodos, Resultados (con tablas, gráficos, figuras y fotos que ayuden a su comprensión), Discusión, Conclusiones (breve, solo lo más importante) y Bibliografía. 

Para escribir el trabajo debe guiarse por las Recomendaciones para la Aplicación, generación de informes, edición y publicación de trabajos académicos en revistas médicas  (http://www.icmje.org/ ). 

Abreviaturas y siglas. Las precederá su nombre completo la primera vez que aparezcan en el texto. No figurarán en títulos ni resúmenes. 

Citas Se empleará el sistema de orden de mención: con números arábigos entre paréntesis, sin superíndices, de la manera siguiente: "Se ha observado (3, 4) que..." O bien: "Varios autores (1–5) han señalado...". En ese mismo orden se agruparán al final del trabajo. Se observará el ordenamiento de los elementos bibliográficos y el uso de los signos de puntuación prescritos por el estilo Vancouver (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html).

El Comité Editorial del Belize Journal of Medicine publicará o no los trabajos de acuerdo a las recomendaciones de los árbitros. Se consideran los siguientes criterios: que el material sea original y se presente en tiempo y forma; la escritura, clara; los métodos utilizados, apropiados; los datos, válidos, las conclusiones son razonables y se basan en los datos, la información es importante y el tema es de interés medico general. Para asegurar la confidencialidad de los trabajos el proceso de arbitraje se hace por pares y a doble ciegas. 

Los árbitros revisarán los trabajos y harán las recomendaciones o sugerencias que estimen convenientes, las cuales serán enviadas a los autores para su consideración y su corrección. El autor devolverá el trabajo ya corregido en un plazo no mayor de 15 días; de no ser así el trabajo podrá ser automáticamente cancelado. La redacción de la revista se reserva el derecho de introducir modificaciones en los artículos recibidos para ajustarlos al estilo de la misma, siempre que no alteren el sentido o significado de su contenido, lo que se comunicará al autor siempre que sea factible.
